| The Little English Schoolhouse is a non-profit project commenced in Puerto Morelos to bring English to the local Spanish speaking children. Although English is taught in the local schools, it is not at a level that provides the students a real "working” fluency. Additionally, a large number of the families do not have the funds to even send their children to school. For many of this future generation, English skills can provide opportunities they would never encounter otherwise and help them escape the cycle of poverty. Prices for private English Classes in Cancun or Playa del Carmen for children can run as high as $50 USD per lesson! The Berlitz-trained instructor at The Little English Schoolhouse has shifted her focus to providing a totally free program, in the library in the Colonia. The initial clinic was a great success. The new classes will begin on Friday Oct 9th and Monday Oct. 12. We hope to add a class each week on Wednesday that will combine both groups. This will give them the opportunity to share what they have learned. It will be a relaxed hour of practicing their English through conversational games, art projects, singing and storytelling. We have also extended the clinic from 3 months to 4 months. Our heartfelt thanks go out to those that donated both supplies and money, but to continue the program and for expansion of classes, we are asking you to support the school in any way you can. This is a very worthy cause that I feel deeply about as does Anna the teacher. We have both have made personal sacrifices to ensure the success of this program and will continue to do so to make this work. And now we are asking for your help as well. We feel that an annual budget of $10,000 will help the school to not only continue the weekend program but to expand the free clinics to 3 classes per week. Latest Note From the Teacher Jan 21, 2010 - Click to read note The Little English Schoolhouse is providing a free English clinic for the children of Puerto Morelos. The clinic has been a great success! It is unarguable that exposing children to a new language early on builds confidence and motivates them to continue learning English after they finish our program. I would like to take the program a step further by offering a class that combines the two groups. This time would give them the opportunity to talk English together, sharing through conversational games, art projects, singing and storytelling. It will also give us the chance to bring the children of the community together with the common interest of learning a new language. I hope you all continue to share in our dream. I realize you don’t get to see it firsthand. It is incredibly rewarding and never fails to warm the heart! With the next clinic I will be posting pictures and updates so you can share in our heartfelt progress. Postscript: We really need to purchase the batteries and memory card for the cameras so I can document the progress of the school. I can purchase them in Cancun (- Batteries: Fuji lithium ion NP-60, Sony NP-FS11 & Sony 2CR5 - Sony Memory Stick MSA4A) Sony 2CR5 - Sony Memory Stick MSA4Abut I don´t have the funds. Please I know it is difficult for a lot of us right now but if you can find a little, together we can make it happen.
